I downloaded Atom which is a third party text editor. Okay, great! However the file is only in my downloads, and when I add it to the bar at the bottom, sometimes my Mac doesn't seem to know where it's looking (i.e. comes up with a question mark).
I am assuming you are installing the atom through a DMG file. In most cases when you open the DMG file you see the application itself and a shortcut to Applications folder. You just need to drag the application and drop it in Applications shortcut icon and the application gets copied to Applications folder.
When you run atom from your downloads folder you see a little white drive like icon, it is the disk image, which is the container for the program after copying you can eject the disk and you'll still have the program.
Depending on your operating system, you will need to download the appropriate Julia package from julialang.org/downloads/ . If you have Windows or OSX, just download and run the installer and follow the instructions. When you are prompted to choose an installation directory, I suggest you to choose your home directory: this way it will be easier when time comes to upgrade Julia to the next version.
To install Juno, open atom, click on file > settings > install and type uber-juno: this is the package that you need to install. uber-juno will do everything by itself and install the IDE in a matter of minutes!

I'm attempting to install Atom on Mac, but when I click "download" on the atom.io site it takes me to Github. I have installed Atom on other devices, and I remember that this would normally just install the software. Does this also happen to anyone else? Are there any alternatives to obtain this software? What should I do?
I guess the Mac version of Atom is not a direct executable file for download and install. If you go to the bottom of the Github page you can download atom-mac.zip by clicking on it. Unzip that and in there is Atom.app. After that, you can drag the app to your Applications folder and it is installed.Check out the installation guide for how to install: -manual.atom.io/getting-started/sections/installing-atom/#platform-mac

The only caveat with Sublime Text is that it's not open source. While you can download the editor for a free trial, you must pay $99 to continue using it. Despite the catch, it's a good text editor that you should try if you've been a long-term Atom user. Here's how you can install Sublime Text on your Linux machine.
When you manually download and extract the zip file you need to run apm install in the package's directory afterwards to pull in any dependencies. This will download all dependencies and place them in the node_modules folder and recursively pulls in their dependencies as well. Since this is not possible in your environment, you'll have to do that manually.
We are looking to support distro repositories such as Debian/Ubuntu repos, Fedora, Snap, Flatpak, Arch/AUR etc. but we need to get to a good point with a stable release before we instigate that so for now the downloadable binaries are the main supported downloads.
Currently searching and downloading from the package repositoryopen in new window is fully functional but other functions for maintaining packages such as publishing/updating/deleting are in beta. Feel free to publish and update your packages, but if you experience any issues please feel free to report this to the Pulsar Team.
The Atom project has been deprecated and is no longer supported. The Ed-Fi team is actively working on a replacement, using Visual Studio Code, and expects to release MetaEd 4.0 on VS Code in the first quarter of 2023. In the meantime, the last version of the Atom installers are still available for download from the GitHub releases page:
If you receive an error at this step that contains "TLSSocket" in the error message, you have a firewall issue either in your enterprise network or on your local machine. See "I can't install MetaEd IDE and I receive a warning relating to fetching or downloading packages" in the Troubleshooting guide for help.
Finally, run "cd node_modules\atom-metaed" and then run "apm link". This should result in a single line of output indicating that an Atom packages directory is pointing to the MetaEd-IDE installation node_modules\atom-metaed directory.
Because Atom is based on Electron, it is compatible with all major operating systems, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. As a result, it enables cross-platform development, and your development configurations and settings may be manually transferred to other Atom installations or via the atom-sync package, which uses GitHub to keep settings and user preferences in sync between Atom installations.
Atom Windows installers may be downloaded at or the Atom Release website. AtomSetup.exe should be used on 32-bit systems, while AtomSetup-x64.exe should be used on 64-bit systems. This setup software will install Atom, append the atom and apm commands to the PATH environment variable, and create desktop and start menu shortcuts. Once the setup has been successfully installed, you can launch and start coding with Atom.
Atom may not be able to configure these commands in certain instances since it requires an administrator password. For example, open a terminal window and type which Atom to determine if Atom could configure the atom command. If the atom command has been installed, the following will appear:

I doubt we are going to be replacing the built-in editor any time soon. Our primary goal right now is to get some sort of editing/debugging capability on Mac Rhino for python scripts. As this feature improves with time we can add support for the Windows version of atom as an alternative editor.
Most of these best code editors are free; you do not have to buy any expensive licenses or whatever to start working on them. Just download a trial version of the said software and see if it fulfills your requirements. Afterward, you can convert to paid software for yourself or the company you are working for.
One of the cool features of this best free code editor is that the developers can submit packages straight from the application. Atom is available for download at multiple platforms: Windows, Linux, and Mac devices. If you are a Mac OSX user, this is the perfect time for you to give this app a shot.
