Sundanese degung is most commonly identified with the traditional instruments used in the region of West Java, Surabaya, and East Java. Degung music is usually played as part of gamelan music, which also includes ronggeng (pipe), seruling (long-necked flute), chitar (lute), kendhang (drum), and gendhang (caxixi). However, it has been reported that the pieces by West Java's musicians are often played with no gendhang (caxixi).

It has been reported that degung does not always consist of the traditional instruments. Moreover, local musicians have been noted for mixing the traditional instruments with the modern ones.
