Daniel Coyle, a neuroscientist and expert kettlebell trainer who has studied under the legendary Russian weightlifter, Vladimir Legenda, has his own take on expert-level strength. "Anyone doing 20 kettlebell exercises a day doesn't have the same level of skill as a world-class athlete," he says. "It takes a long time to work on the things that make you really good at what you do.""
There are a number of skills that make someone an expert in a field, but the most important is discipline. "This is the idea that someone has the skills, but they put them to the side a little bit. They are generally kind of experts in their own minds," Coyle says. "They put them in a small silo that they defend in their mind and then they go, I've got to help somebody else, I've got to get a promotion. I've got to improve my results."
Mentally, this can limit your ability to make progress. For example, when a survey company receives hundreds of responses, it's a lot easier to dismiss the low-quality responses that fit the profile of what it's looking for.
For example, let's say you're conducting a customer survey about your favorite meal and you're looking for people with at least an 8 out of 10 satisfaction rating. If your most popular restaurant has a 90% rating, you won't have enough data to get the average. You can have a strict filter that dismisses answers a la ranges.
But doing so means losing out on a lot of information. For example, if a restaurant that has a 90% satisfaction rating has 200 diners, you are only going to be able to see the result for the last 10% of them. The same is true if you're looking for results from a smaller city or a specific demographic.
